The great depression was one of the most difficult times in American History. It began with the stock market crash of 1929 and quickly spiraled into a nationwide economic crisis that left millions unemployed, displaced, and struggling to survive. Banks collapsed, businesses shut their doors, and families across the country were forced to adapt to hardships few had ever imagined. For many Americans, daily life became a constant battle to get by.

The added color in these photos gives new life to scenes of struggling families, exhausted workers, and children growing up during these uncertain times.
