Design fails usually begin with a perfectly reasonable goal: make something safer, easier, faster, clearer, or more convenient. Then somewhere between the idea and the finished product, it practically takes an unexpected detour.
These 18 examples show what happens when a solution technically exists but creates a whole new collection of headaches. From a school filter that blocks an educational website to stairs that seem determined to confuse anyone using them, they prove that solving the original problem is only half the job.
1. Duolingo Has Been Expelled

The school filter blocked Duolingo while correctly identifying it as “Education.” Even the software knows this makes no sense.
2. Privacy Has Left the Building

A door was installed to give this changing area some privacy. Unfortunately, someone chose glass, because apparently the wall needed a viewing window.
3. Good Luck Finding the Actual Step

Those dark stripes were supposed to make the stairs easier to see. Instead, every step now comes with a complimentary optical illusion.
4. Was That Drive or the Volume?

This car puts the gear selector right next to a collection of other innocent-looking knobs. One adjusts your settings. The other moves several thousand pounds of automobile.
5. Congratulations, You’ve Built Traffic

More toll lanes were added to handle more cars, which works beautifully until all those lanes have to become one road again. Traffic jam, now with extra steps.

6. The Forbidden Energy Drink

That refreshing-looking can is actually radiator coolant. Nothing says “hazardous automotive fluid” quite like packaging that whispers “crack me open after the gym.”
7. Welcome to the Bathroom. You Live Here Now

Open the drawer, and it can block the bathroom door. Congratulations on your new apartment. It has a toilet.
8. Reading Shouldn’t Be This Competitive

The window lettering and banner collide so spectacularly that reading the message becomes a choose-your-own-adventure. Somewhere in there, presumably, is a sentence.

9. Stairs Designed by Someone Who Hates Ankles

These corner steps get dramatically narrower as they turn. Your feet wanted consistency; the architect wanted suspense.
10. An Outlet for Spider-Man

There is indeed an electrical outlet. Reaching it, however, appears to be a side quest.
11. Close Enough, Apparently

This accessibility symbol got a little creative with the assignment. The wheelchair icon is recognizable, but only after your brain finishes buffering.
12. I Just Wanted to Heat My Leftovers

This microwave control panel offers enough symbols and pathways to launch a small satellite. Your lasagna will be ready immediately after orientation.
13. The Stool Has Chosen Violence

A metal rod is protruding directly through the seat. The stool has officially resigned from furniture and entered the weapons industry.
14. Your Toy Is Somewhere in There

The toys are the tiny pile. Everything else is what you had to unwrap to reach them. Christmas morning, sponsored by the packaging industry.
15. Accessibility, But Only for the First Half

The ramp provides a step-free route right up until it introduces stairs. Accessibility has apparently been released as a free trial.
16. When Door Handles Have Beef

Both door handles work perfectly until they meet each other. Apparently nobody introduced them during the design phase.
17. The Ramp and the Stairs Are in a Complicated Relationship

Someone tried to combine a ramp and staircase into one elegant solution. The ramp and staircase have since decided they need couples therapy.
A good design can disappear into everyday life because everything simply works. These designs do the opposite. They make people stop, look twice, and wonder how the solution managed to become another problem. And perhaps that is the most useful thing about design fails: once the flaw is obvious, the value of thoughtful design becomes impossible to miss.
