Alcatraz became one of the most infamous prisons in American history, isolated on an island in San Francisco Bay and home to some of the country’s most notorious criminals. Known for its harsh conditions and tight security, it came to symbolize punishment, escape attempts, and life under constant control. Stories of famous inmates, failed breakouts, and daily hardship helped build its lasting reputation. These images offer a glimpse into what life was really like behind the cold walls of Alcatraz.

1. The cells weren’t very spacious. Here are the cells of two inmates who escaped.
