1984 wasn’t just the title of Orwell’s infamous dystopia. It was the real-world backdrop of Macintosh’s 1984 Super Bowl commercial, the all-out reign of Prince, and the Summer Olympics that also glimmered with heightened Cold War stakes.

It was amid all that noise that everyday life still unfolded in skate parks, shopping malls, and living-room Nintendo sessions. Enjoy a ride through these 35 vintage photos of 1984. They’re indeed a powerful time capsule.
