Some things are way bigger than we imagine, even when we think we have a pretty good sense of their size. It’s easy to underestimate scale until you see a comparison that puts everything into perspective. Objects, places, and even everyday items can feel completely different once you realize just how massive they really are.
As you go through these examples, you may find yourself doing a double-take more than once. Seeing something next to a person makes the difference impossible to ignore. These moments are a reminder that our sense of scale is not always as accurate as we think, and sometimes, the world is a lot bigger than it seems. Let’s take a look at 15 things that are way larger than people realize.
1. An aircraft carrier

The USS Gerald R. Ford is over one thousand feet long, or more than three football fields placed end to end. It displaces around one hundred thousand tons of water when fully loaded, which is roughly the weight of 400,000 blue whales combined. Its flight deck is large enough that it takes an athlete around thirty seconds to run from one end to the other at full sprint.
2. The blue whale

Yeah, no. I’ll avoid the deep ocean forever and always. As you can see, the blue whale is so large that humans could swim through its arteries. Its heart is the size of a small car and can weigh over a thousand pounds. Even its tongue alone could weigh more than an adult elephant, making the rest of its body almost impossible to imagine in real life.
3. Wind turbine blades

A single blade on a wind turbine can stretch over 300 feet long, which is as long as an entire football field. When they are transported, they require many special vehicles and, most of the time, even road closures. Up close, they feel less like a machine part and more like a massive airplane wing resting on the ground.
4. Redwood Trees

These bad boys can rise over 350 feet into the sky, making them taller than many skyscrapers. Standing at their base, the trunk seems more like a wall rather than a tree. These massive redwoods create a vertical city made completely out of wood.
5. The Great Pyramid of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza contains an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks and stands over four hundred and fifty feet tall. Each block can weigh between two and fifteen tons, and to put the size in perspective, the pyramid covers a space large enough that several city blocks could fit inside it. It’s essentially a mountain that was built by people.

6. A ship propeller

The size of these propellers makes sense when you look at the ships they’re on. Propellers on large ships can be over thirty feet across. Each blade alone can be taller than a person and weigh several tons. When one is sitting in a dry dock, it looks less like a part and more like a giant metal sculpture.
7. A ship anchor

Anchors used on massive cargo ships can weigh 20 to 30 tons, which is heavier than several elephants combined. When you stand next to one, it shows the sheer size, and looks like some sort of industrial sculpture rather than a tool. The chain connected is just as extreme, with each link weighing between three and five hundred pounds.
8. Saltwater crocodiles

Not only are these prehistoric monsters massive, but they’re also terrifying. They have been recorded at over 20 feet long and can weigh more than a ton. Their heads, as you can see, are massive, with jaws strong enough to crush bone with ease. Seeing them next to a person makes them look less like a reptile and more like a living dinosaur.

9. Mining trucks

The BelAZ is one of the largest trucks ever built, standing over twenty-five feet tall. It can carry up to 450 tons of material in a single load, which is more than the weight of a fully loaded airplane. Even its tires are over 13 feet tall.
10. A jet engine

Engines on planes like the Boeing 777 are so large that a few people could stand completely inside the intake. The diameter can exceed ten feet, and each engine produces more power than you could imagine.
11. The giant squid

The giant squid has been recorded at sizes over forty feet long, which can explain why sailors believed in the kraken back in the day. Their eyes can measure around thirteen inches across, which is roughly the same size as a dinner plate, helping them detect faint light deep underwater where almost nothing else can see.
12. A submarine

Submarines like the Ohio-class submarine are over 550 feet long. They can weigh around 18,000 tons when submerged, and when one is out of the water, people standing next to the hull barely reach a small section of its curved surface, making it seem more like a building than a vehicle.
13. A cruise ship anchor chain

The anchor chains on massive cruise ships are enormous, with each link weighing over three hundred pounds. The full chain can stretch over one thousand feet and weigh hundreds of rons. When crew members stand next to the entire chain, it looks like something built for giants.
14. Salt mines

Massive underground salt mines can stretch for hundreds of miles beneath the surface, forming entire networks of tunnels and chambers. Some sections are so large that heavy machinery and trucks drive through them like highways, and the ceilings can rise dozens of feet overhead. When people stand inside, the scale is truly unreal.
15. Tunnel boring machines

Tunnel boring machines can be over 300 feet long, with a front cutting head that spans more than 50 feet across. That’s wide enough to cut a multi-lane highway underground. Workers standing in front of this machine look like ants, and it’s wild to think that this is something we actually use.
