It goes without saying that school life for kids in the 30s looked and felt very different from what students experience today. Classrooms were often simple and tightly structured, with rows of wooden desks and a strong emphasis on discipline. In many places, education continued even as families dealt with the hardships of the Great Depression, making it one of the few stable parts of daily life for kids during that decade.

Lined up for lessons, gathered for class photos, or participating in group activities, these photos reflect a generation learning under very different circumstances than today. Together, they let us see into the lives of the people who lived through one of the toughest decades in our nation’s history.
