Unbeknownst to so many, behind the walls and under the floors of numerous historic buildings, exist chambers that served both secretive and practical purposes alike. There are also the lost buildings themselves to account for. Both these secret rooms and lost buildings are often discovered decades and even centuries after the fact.

However, they provide powerful glimpses into previous generations’ ingenuity and paranoia. We’ll look at 17 of the most fascinating secret rooms and lost buildings ever discovered in history.

1. Machu Picchu’s Secret Room (2014)
