Before the apps and dashboards mapped it all, the family road trip ran on paper maps, printed directions, and a glove box full of mixtapes. Between bench seats, wood-paneled wagons, foam coolers, and that first snapshot at the state line, every mile looked a little sun-faded and a lot hopeful.
All of these photos carry the same small ritual: gas station treats, roadside picnics, breathtaking views, and siblings drowsy in the back. From the 1960s through the 1990s, the film and the cars changed, but the road trip feeling stayed the same.
