For millions of immigrants, Ellis Island was the gateway to a new life in America. Between 1892 and 1954, people from around the world arrived carrying little more than a bag on their backs, hope, and the belief that greater opportunities awaited them on the other side of the inspection process. Some journeys had taken weeks or even months, making Ellis Island the final stop in a life-changing transition.

These photos capture families waiting anxiously and countless individuals who are taking their first steps into a country they hoped to call home. Together, they preserve the emotions and optimism that defined one of the most important chapters in our nation’s history.
