A lone seated protester faces a line of uniformed police officers standing shoulder to shoulder on a city street. The scene is tense, with the protester holding a sign as the officers form a barrier.

For thirteen tense days in October 1962, the world found itself closer to nuclear war than ever before. The Cuban Missile Crisis was an extremely dangerous time when the United States and the Soviet Union confronted one another over the placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba, creating a standoff that held the attention of governments and ordinary citizens alike. Every new development carried enormous weight, and millions of people followed the crisis with a sense of uncertainty about what might happen next.

The images collected here capture the atmosphere of those anxious days. Political leaders, military preparations, public reactions, and scenes from the crisis itself help tell the story of a moment when global events seemed balanced on a knife’s edge. Looking back at these photographs offers a powerful reminder of how close the world came to a conflict whose consequences would have been impossible to ignore. Let’s take a look at 20 vintage images from the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This man, Vasili Arkhipov, is one of the main reasons we are all alive today. During a tense moment in the Cuban Missile Crisis, a Soviet nuclear submarine mistook U.S. naval activity for the beginning of a nuclear war. The crew prepared to launch their nuclear torpedo, which required the approval of all three senior officers on board. Two agreed, but Arkhipov refused. His decision to hold back likely prevented a full-scale nuclear conflict and, ultimately, global catastrophe.
